Candidate Alfonso Todd III Proclaims “No to Water Privatization” by Kevin Bahler
Allentown resident and entrepreneur Alfonso Todd III is running for Allentown City council. As part of his community-centered platforms, Todd strongly opposes Water Privatization, the plan to sell the rights to the city's water to a for-profit company for the next 50 years.
Although the deal to privatize the water could help in balancing the city's budget, there are significant concerns to be addressed. "Taxes will rise because the private water company will not provide or pay for many city services that Allentown is currently paying for with water revenue," Todd writes in his blog Urban Renewal. Other concerns include increasing costs over water over time, as Todd writes, "It has been quoted that the rates could go up from 700 - 1,200 percent over the proposed 50 year lease."
Todd's campaign slogan is "We CAN Do Better" and all of his platforms are focused on improving the quality of the leadership of Allentown. These platforms include: Government Transparency, which involves not only having information be available, but ensuring that it reaches the citizens to keep them informed; Economic Development, seeking to turn Allentown into a destination for music, arts, and entertainment, which would also increase tourism; and Community Involvement, encouraging all citizens to take part and take pride in the growth and development of Allentown.
